This wine comes from vineyards situated on the Villafrancien terraces of St. Marcel d'Ardèche, on the hills of Avignon and Roquemaure. The terroir is a mixture of sand from the "Aigues" valley and layered stones on slopes from the "Plan de Dieu." The myriad of soils offer excellent drainage and water reserves, enabling the vines to resist hydric stress, while the sun and Mistral winds work their magic on the predominantly Grenache noir vines, which are gobelet trained with yields of 44 to 50 hL/ha.
TASTING NOTES | COLOR: Deep cherry red with beautiful purple hues AROMA: Very expressive nose dominated by spice (cinnamon), garrigue (wild scrubs), and ample fruit including plums, cherries, and blackberries, followed by aromas of bitumen, tobacco, and orange peel FLAVOR: Silky and full with permanent freshness and silky tannins, culminating in a superb spicy red fruit finale.
FOOD PAIRING | Perfect with roasted, stewed, and sauce-based red meats.
VINIFICATION | The grapes are harvested manually and partially destemmed with no crushing. Fermentation takes place under controlled temperatures of 22-23°C at the beginning, ending at 30-32°C. Vatting lasts for 30-35 days at 28-30°C depending on the vats. Co-fermentation of the Grenaches and Syrahs whenever conditions allow for improved synergy between these complementary varietals.
AGING | The wine matures for 8 months partly in concrete vats and in wooden foeders (large oak barrels of 60-80 hectoliters).
PRODUCER | The history of Ogier dates back to 1859, but wine-growing only began in 1948. The beautiful Roman-style buildings of the winery house cellars in Châteauneuf-du-Pape that date from the 20th century and are among the oldest in the southern Rhône valley. Since 2006, Ogier has fully committed to sustainability with all vineyards grown organically. The Ogier team has been passionately creating beautiful wines from the Rhône Valley for about 150 years, beginning with the prestigious vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
