Discover the extraordinary character that only decades-old vines can produce with Compton Family Wines Old Vine Pinot Noir. This distinguished Oregon classic showcases the elegant complexity achieved through patient viticulture and thoughtful winemaking in the southern coastal foothills of the Willamette Valley.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Light garnet with brilliant clarity.

Nose: Wonderfully perfumed with enticing aromas of briary raspberries, crushed brick dust, red cherry, cranberry, strawberry, and subtle spice cabinet notes.

Palate: Superbly balanced and silky-smooth with vibrant red fruit flavors of cherry, raspberry, and subtle orange-flavored pipe tobacco and lemon zest. The wine glides across the palate with gracious tannins, cohesive acidity, and a pure fruit expression. Subtle minerality and earthy undertones add complexity to this perfectly mature Pinot Noir.

Behind the Wine

This exceptional wine represents a harmonious blend from three distinct vineyards averaging 35 years of age: Compton Family Farms Vineyard (planted 1998), Hoot & Howl Vineyard (planted 1986), and Mary's Peak Vineyard (planted 1977). All sites are dry-farmed, featuring predominantly Pommard, Wädenswil, and Dijon 115 clones grown in marine alluvial and sedimentary soils.

These mature vines, with their deep root systems, extract profound character from the Willamette Valley's distinctive terroir, resulting in a wine that showcases darker fruits, earth tones, and perfectly integrated tannins. After careful vinification, the wine ages for 18 months in French oak barrels, developing additional complexity while preserving the pure expression of fruit.

Acclaim

92 Points & Editor's Choice - Wine Enthusiast Magazine
"I don't often get to review wines with a little bottle age, so this was a treat. This superbly balanced wine is in a perfect spot right now, beginning with its aromas of briary raspberries and crushed brick dust. Cherry, orange-flavored pipe tobacco and lemon zest flavors glide along a silky-smooth palate. Enjoy this wine from tonight until 2027."

93 Points - Prince of Pinot
"Juicy and bright in a middleweight style featuring plenty of unctuous red fruit flavors annotated with spice and framed by suede tannins."
