A true grower Champagne from the Côte des Bar, made by the family that farms the vines. Pinot Noir-driven, generous and polished, and a real step up from the big-house names at a price that still makes sense.
Taste
Fresh and baked apple, poached pear and a whiff of warm bread, with a touch of lemon curd and very fine, persistent bubbles. The Pinot Noir gives it real richness and structure, while bright acidity keeps it lively through a clean, dry finish.
About the Winery/Winemaker
The Gaucher family has farmed vines in Arconville, in the Aube's Côte des Bar, since the end of the 19th century, and began making their own Champagne in the early 1980s. They are récoltant-manipulants, growers who make Champagne only from their own fruit, which is what the "RM" on the label means. Today Guillaume and Valérie Gaucher run the estate with a small team, farming Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on the limestone soils of southern Champagne.
Why We Love It
Grower Champagne is where the most interesting bubbles are right now, and this is a great introduction. You get the richness of a Pinot Noir-based Champagne without paying for a famous house name. Pour it to open a dinner party, with fried chicken, or with anything salty and crisp.
