American Toffee is harder, as it's made with granulated white sugar (e.g. Almond Roca®, Heath Bar®) usually cooked with nuts and rolled in chocolate.

This is actually what the Brits call "butter crunch"...introduced by English immigrant William Loft in New York City in 1860. Thus, most "toffee" you get in the USA is not a true English Toffee like ours.
